Soft Serve Photo Tips: Get the Perfect Cone Shot

Soft serve is one of the most photogenic desserts there is, and one of the hardest to shoot, because you have about 60 seconds before it starts to droop. Here’s how to get the shot fast.

Ice cream photography tips: Alpacco two-tone pistachio soft serve in a small branded cup

Prepare before you order

  • Open your camera app and clean the lens.
  • Pick your spot before the swirl is handed to you.
  • Decide your shot. Don’t experiment while it melts.

Light

  • Natural light wins. Soft daylight in shade is ideal.
  • Avoid harsh midday sun. It blows out the white swirl and speeds up melting.
  • Golden hour (late afternoon) gives warm, flattering tones.
  • Turn off flash. It flattens texture.

Angles

Angle Best for
Straight-on, eye level Showing swirl height on a cone
45° Cups with toppings
Top-down Colourful toppings like pulut hitam
Low angle Making a cone look tall and dramatic

Composition ideas

  • Hand-held cone against a clean background.
  • Kiosk backdrop: our kiosk and signage make a fun setting. Avoid capturing other customers’ faces without permission.
  • Two cones “cheersing” for friends or dates. See Dessert Date Ideas in Klang.
  • Colour contrast: green Pistachio, brown Belgium Chocolate, white Milk.
  • Topping close-up: gula melaka drizzle or deep-purple pulut hitam. See Pulut Hitam Soft Serve.
  • Outfit match: coordinate your tee with your flavour. Alpacco started as a streetwear brand, after all. See Why Does a Streetwear Brand Sell Ice Cream?

Shooting Cloud drinks

  • Shoot from the side to show the soft serve “cloud” floating on top.
  • Shoot immediately, before it sinks.
  • Fizzy Clouds (Sarsaparilla, Coke) look best with the bubbles visible.

See Cloud Drinks Explained.

Phone settings

  1. Tap to focus on the swirl.
  2. Lower exposure slightly so the white soft serve keeps its detail.
  3. Use portrait mode for background blur.
  4. Burst mode for a dripping or “cheers” moment.

Then eat it!

Take three shots max, then enjoy. See How to Eat Soft Serve Before It Melts.
