Our weather does half the convincing. A relaxed fit lets air move around your body instead of clinging to it, so a good oversized tee often feels cooler than a slim one in 33°C heat. It’s forgiving on different body shapes, easy to dress up or down, and it suits our very casual, very practical style: shorts and slippers to the pasar malam, cargos and sneakers to the mall, jeans for a dinner date.
The catch is that “oversized” is only a word on a listing. The details below are what separate a tee you’ll wear for years from one that ends up as a kain buruk.
5 things to check before you buy an oversized tee
1. Fabric weight (gsm)
Gsm means grams per square metre, and it tells you roughly how thick and dense the fabric is. Most basic tees are fairly light. Oversized streetwear tees usually sit in the mid-to-heavyweight range, so the shirt holds its boxy shape instead of collapsing. Tip: A heavier tee isn’t automatically hotter. Breathability depends just as much on the cotton and the knit. A heavier, tightly knit cotton can feel cooler and drier on your skin than a thin polyester blend.
2. Cotton type
Look for 100% cotton, and ideally combed cotton. Combing removes the short, loose fibres, so you get a smoother surface, less pilling and a softer feel that gets better with every wash. Polyester blends dry faster, but they tend to trap heat and hold onto smells, and that’s not great for sweaty Malaysian afternoons.
3. A real drop-shoulder cut
This is the biggest giveaway. On a true oversized tee, the shoulder seam sits below your natural shoulder, partway down the upper arm. That’s what gives it the relaxed, slouchy streetwear shape. 4. Sizing that suits your body
Good oversized brands tell you whether to buy your usual size or size down. Check the chest width and body length, not only the S/M/L label. Short torso? Watch the length. Broad shoulders? A drop shoulder gives you room without making you buy a size that’s too long.
5. Colour and print quality
Cheap dye fades fast under our sun. Look for rich colours, and if the tee has a graphic, check that the print is crisp and doesn’t feel like a thick plastic sticker. Earth tones (coffee brown, malt, camel, army green) are big right now and easy to style.

- The listing says “oversized” but the photos show a high shoulder seam
- No fabric weight or material listed anywhere
- The model photos look nothing like the flat-lay photos
- No size chart, or only “free size”
- Collar ribbing that already looks wavy in the photos (it will only get worse)

Should I size up for an oversized look?
If the tee is already cut oversized (with a drop shoulder), buy your usual size. Size up only if you want an extra-baggy look. The Alpacco Graphic Tee is a drop-shoulder, unisex cut in sizes S–3XL, so most people can simply pick their usual size.
Are oversized tees too hot for Malaysian weather?
