It’s 33°C outside, the humidity feels like a wet towel, and someone tells you to buy a heavyweight tee. It sounds wrong. Surely thinner means cooler?
Not always. Plenty of people in Klang, KL and Penang wear a heavyweight tee in Malaysia every day and stay comfortable. The secret is in the fibre, the fit and a few habits. This post busts the common myths, so you can decide for yourself whether a 260gsm tee belongs in your wardrobe.
What “heavyweight” actually means
T-shirt weight is measured in gsm, grams per square metre of fabric. Roughly:
- Under 180gsm: lightweight. Often thin, sometimes see-through.
- 180–220gsm: midweight. Your everyday basic.
- 230gsm and up: heavyweight territory, with a fuller hand-feel and better structure.
Our Alpacco Graphic Tee (the MT Mood Tee) is 260gsm, 100% combed cotton. Our Logo Tee is 230gsm combed cotton. If the numbers are new to you, read What Does 250gsm vs 260gsm Mean? first.
Myth 1: Heavier always means hotter
Weight is only one part of how warm a tee feels. Just as important are:
- What the fibre is. Cotton absorbs moisture and lets air through. Most synthetics don’t absorb in the same way.
- How the fabric touches your skin. A tee that clings to a sweaty back feels much hotter than one that hangs away from it.
- Colour. Dark colours absorb more sunlight than light ones, whatever the gsm.
A loose 260gsm cotton tee often feels cooler than a tight 160gsm polyester blend, because air can move between the fabric and your body.
Myth 2: Thin tees breathe better
Thin tees can breathe well, but cheap thin tees have problems in our climate:
- They cling the moment you sweat, so you can see sweat patches straight away.
- They turn see-through when damp.
- They lose shape after a few washes, with wavy hems and stretched collars.
A heavier knit holds its shape and drapes away from the body. You feel the fabric, but you don’t feel stuck to it. For a lot of Malaysians, that’s the real comfort upgrade.
Myth 3: Cotton traps sweat, so polyester is better
For the gym, technical polyester makes sense because it wicks and dries fast. For daily life, cotton has advantages:
- Softer on skin, especially combed cotton, where short, rough fibres are removed before spinning.
- Less odour build-up than many synthetics after a long day.
- Better for prints. Graphics sit cleanly on a smooth cotton surface.
Combed cotton is a step up from regular cotton. Combing straightens the fibres and removes the short ones, so the yarn is smoother, stronger and less prone to pilling. That’s why a good 260gsm combed cotton tee feels soft rather than stiff or heavy.
Myth 4: Heavyweight tees are only for aircon malls
Malaysians move between heat and aircon all day: the LRT, the office, the mamak, the mall, then the car park again. A heavyweight tee handles that switch well. It doesn’t feel flimsy in a cold office, and a relaxed cut keeps it comfortable outdoors.
That said, if your day is mostly outdoors under the midday sun, choose your colour and fit carefully (see below).
How to stay cool in a heavyweight tee
- Go relaxed. A drop-shoulder, oversized cut lets air circulate. See Drop Shoulder T-Shirt Explained.
- Pick lighter colours for outdoor days. White, Goose Yellow, Sport Grey and other soft shades reflect more sun than black or navy.
- Pair with breathable bottoms. Shorts, linen trousers or loose cargos. Our streetwear outfit ideas has combos that work in the heat.
- Size sensibly. Too tight and the benefit disappears. Our oversized sizing guide shows how to find the right fit.
- Care for the cotton. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, no bleach, tumble dry low or air dry, and don’t iron over prints. Well-kept cotton stays soft and breathable for longer.

What buyers say about the heat
From reviews on our oversized tee listing on Shopee: ch.hanif (Malt L, Coffee Green L) found the fabric comfortable, “not too thick, not too thin” (translated from Malay). They added an honest tip: lighter colours can show sweat in the midday heat. a*****i (Camel, M) called it “Super comfortable to wear” with “no issues with the 100% cotton material.”
The verdict
A heavyweight tee isn’t too hot for Malaysia, if it’s breathable combed cotton in a relaxed fit. You get a tee that holds its shape, hides sweat better, survives more washes and still feels soft at the end of a long, humid day.

FAQ
Is 260gsm too thick for Malaysian weather?
Not if it’s cotton in a relaxed fit. It feels substantial, but air still moves through and around it. Most people find it comfortable for daily wear.
Which is cooler, the Graphic Tee or the Logo Tee?
The Logo Tee is lighter at 230gsm, with a neater relaxed regular fit. The 260gsm Graphic Tee is heavier but looser, with a drop shoulder, so both stay comfortable. Choose based on the look you want.
Does combed cotton feel hotter than regular cotton?
No. It’s the same fibre, just smoother and stronger, so it feels softer against your skin.
Will a heavyweight tee show sweat less?
Generally yes. Thicker fabric clings less and is less likely to turn see-through when damp.
How should I wash it?
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, no bleach, tumble dry low or air dry, and don’t iron over the print.
