How to Wash a Cotton Tee So Prints and Colour Last

You found the perfect graphic tee. The fit is right, the print is fire, and then after a few washes the colour looks dull and the graphic starts to crack. Most of the time, it’s not the tee. It’s the wash routine.

Here’s a simple, Malaysia-friendly guide to washing, drying and storing cotton tees so the print and colour last.

Step-by-step: washing a graphic tee

How to wash a graphic tee: machine wash cold, no bleach, tumble dry low or air dry, do not iron over prints, with an Alpacco Little Monster tee

1. Turn it inside out.
This is the single best habit. The print faces inward, so it doesn’t rub against zips, buttons, jeans or the drum.

2. Sort by colour.
Wash darks with darks and lights with lights, especially for the first few washes, when cotton is most likely to release dye.

3. Use cold water.
Hot water speeds up fading, can loosen prints and makes cotton more likely to shrink. Cold water cleans everyday sweat just fine.

4. Choose a gentle cycle.
Less agitation means less friction on the print and fibres.

5. Go easy on detergent.
Too much detergent leaves residue that can dull colours. Use the recommended amount, and skip bleach completely. Bleach weakens cotton and can discolour both the fabric and the print.

6. Don’t overload the machine.
Tees need room to move so they rinse properly and don’t twist into knots.

7. Take it out promptly.
Leaving wet tees in the drum causes creases and that musty smell, which is a real risk in our humidity.

Hand washing? Use cool water and a little mild detergent. Gently squeeze instead of scrubbing the print, then press out water with a towel instead of wringing.

Drying in Malaysian weather

Our weather is both a blessing and a curse for drying.

  • Air dry in the shade. Strong direct sun fades colours fast, especially black and bright shades. A shaded balcony or a well-ventilated indoor spot is ideal.
  • Dry inside out. Even in shade, this protects the print side.
  • Hang from the hem or fold over a rail. Hanging by the shoulders on thin hangers can leave bumps, and pegging by the collar can stretch it.
  • Tumble dry low if you must. Use the lowest heat setting and take it out while it’s just dry. High heat is the number one cause of shrinkage and cracked prints.
  • Rainy season? Use a fan or dehumidifier indoors, and don’t leave tees damp for long.

Ironing a printed tee

Short answer: never iron directly over the print. Heat can melt, smudge or crack it.

If your tee needs it:

  1. Turn it inside out.
  2. Use a low or medium setting.
  3. Iron around the graphic, or place a cloth between the iron and the print area.

A heavier tee, like our 260gsm MT Mood Tee, tends to hang out its own wrinkles if you hang or fold it straight after washing. More on fabric weight in What Does 250gsm vs 260gsm Mean?

Storing your tees

  • Fold, don’t hang, for long-term storage. Hanging heavier tees for months can stretch the shoulders.
  • Fold with the print inside to reduce rubbing.
  • Keep them dry. In humid rooms, leave a little space in your drawer for air to circulate.
  • Travelling? Roll them. It saves space and reduces sharp creases.

Common mistakes that ruin prints

Mistake What happens Fix
Hot wash Fading, shrinking, loosened print Wash cold
Bleach Weak fibres, discoloured print Skip it
High-heat dryer Shrinking, cracked print Tumble dry low or air dry
Drying in direct sun Faded colour Dry in the shade, inside out
Ironing over the print Smudged or melted graphic Iron inside out, around the print
Washing with jeans and zips Scuffed print, pilling Turn inside out, wash with similar fabrics

Special cases: black, white and washed tees

Black tees: wash inside out in cold water and always dry them in the shade. Sun is black’s biggest enemy.

White tees: wash them separately so they don’t pick up colour. Skip bleach, even for whites, because it can yellow cotton over time and damage the print.

Washed tees: fabrics like our Blackwash Tee are designed to look faded and uneven. Wash them with similar colours, inside out and cold, so the back print stays sharp.

Long sleeves: the same rules apply. Our Signature Cotton Long Sleeve follows the same care routine.

Why fabric quality helps

Good care goes further on good fabric. 100% cotton, and especially combed cotton, has smoother, longer fibres that pill less and hold up better wash after wash.
